Prefab

Prefabricated (prefab) homes offer a flexible option for homeowners. This isn’t the “mobile home” you might be thinking of. Prefab homes are often stunning, modern, and quality-built structures. The quality-controlled factory construction processes have led to prefabs earning a reputation for being able to withstand natural disasters.

Prefab homes are often built in a shorter, and more reliable time frame – minimizing delays that come with traditionally-built homes. An added benefit is that due to the processes involved, there are often zero (or less) inspection hassles given that homes are up to regional code as soon as they are built. Typically a home is delivered in one or several pieces, assembled onsite, and hooked up to utilities.

Prefab homes are also often built with a significantly lower carbon footprint with higher energy efficiency ratings, and can often leave a smaller environment on-site footprint when installed at the final location.

Affordability and cost are often the main benefit to buyers. While the sizes and features of prefab homes can vary wildly – from thousands to millions – generally, prefab homes are less costly versus comparable traditionally built homes.

Not without downsides, there are critical items to consider when purchasing a prefab home. Design options and customization are limited by the manufacturer. As a result, it’s critical to thoroughly research the home and ensure it meets expectations. Coupled with this, financing can be more difficult than that of a traditionally built home. Interested buyers should connect with their financial advisor to understand regional requirements.
